Flat Key Signatures in Music and the Circle of Fifths

Flat Key Signatures in Music and the Circle of Fifths

You will find the the F Major, B Flat Major, E Flat Major, A Flat Major, D Flat Major, G Flat Major and C Flat Major scales in the green, blue and purple circles on the Circle of Fifths diagram below.

Circle of Fifths Key Signatures in Music

As seen in the Circle of Fifths chart above, the key signature for each flat scale follows a definite pattern which adds one flat each time the scales proceed down and to the left on the circle.  This makes it easy to memorize the order in which the flats are added.

The order of the first four flats spells the word BEAD.  The other following three flats are G, C and F and can be memorized with this easy sentence:  Gold Covered Floors.  Use these two tools and you will easily have the flat scale key signatures mastered.
