3 Secrets To Reading Music

  • The music staff acts as a grid for music notes and when the notes are going upward on the staff they are moving to the right or top of your piano keyboard.
  • The same is true for music notes moving downward on the staff and toward the left          bottom of your instrument.
  • The two primary music intervals are the 2nd and the 3rd.  A 2nd is the distance between one white key to the next white key on the piano.  A 3rd is the distance between one white key skipping to the 3rd white key.
  • The illustration below provides a visual explanation.

Learn to Read Music Intervals

Beginner music students who master the simple visual language of reading music intervals can read music.

As explained in the above video, a 2nd is measured as the very next note on the piano, keyboard, guitar or any other musical instrument. This can be a 2nd either above or below any given note.

For example, in the music interval chart below the given note is C, a 2nd (second) above C is D. A 2nd below C is the note B. Another example is a given note of F with a 2nd above F being the note G and a 2nd below F is the note E.

Using the interval of a 3rd now you would simply skip one note from any given note moving either in an upward or downward direction.

For example, a 3rd (third) above C is E and a 3rd below C is A.
Also a 3rd above F is A and a third below F is D.
