Fur Elise Real Story Behind Title

There is ambiguity in the history of Fur Elise.  This is attributed to its title. Elise, or Elisabeth Rockel, was one of Beethoven’s friends and he had known her since 1808.

Historians claim Beethoven was in love with her and dedicated this particular piece to her. There are many historians who have disputed this fact. Their claim is that Nohl misread the transcript.

Yet, popular belief is that Beethoven composed this bagatelle for Elise. Elisabeth Rockel was a soprano singer. She was given the name ‘Elise’ by a parish priest, but she didn’t introduce herself by this name.

She used the names ‘Betty’ or ‘Maria Eva’ for herself. However, Beethoven called her Elise, so this substantiates Nohl’s interpretation.

Historians say Beethoven was in love with Theresa von Brobdik and not Elisabeth Rockel. They claim the piece should be called Fur Therese and not Fur Elise. Over time the name Fur Elise is accepted as correct.
