What are Music Intervals?
A music interval is the distance between two notes on the music staff. This distance between two notes is the basis of how you learn to read music. This is the same process on any instrument whether it is piano, guitar, flute violin or voice.
The first music interval to learn is the interval of a second or 2nd. This is also referred to as a Step on the music staff. Look at the example of a 2nd to see that the first note is on a line and the second note is on a space.
The next most important music interval to learn is the interval of a third or 3rd. The example to the right shows that the interval of a third includes two line notes that are right above one another.
When you look at the harmonic intervals (far right example) of a 2nd and a 3rd you will notice that there are two notes on one stem. This means that those two notes are played at the same time as a two note chord.
After you have mastered the two basic music intervals of a second and a third you are now ready to branch out even further to learn about fourths, fifths, sixths, sevenths and finally, octaves. Octaves are formed by playing, for example, middle C and going up to Treble C or 8 notes apart.
